The Careers staff bloggers are…
Sarah M – Information Manager
My first degree was in geography from the University of Sheffield and I completely empathise with anyone coming out of a degree with no clue what to do next. For me the next step was a variety of work experience until I decided on a career in library and information work for which I needed a postgraduate degree. I worked in further education and local government libraries before joining the Careers Service.
Much of my daily work involves talking to students and graduates about their needs and keeping up to date with the latest information sources for career options and opportunities. I’ll be keeping you informed about new publications and the latest news on events.
Sarah W - Project Officer, Workplace
Since graduating with a degree in Economics and Politics with North American Studies, I’ve worked at the Careers Service. I had a place on a postgraduate degree at an Ivy League university but wasn’t able to take it up due to a lack of funding. I enjoyed my time at university and thought I’d like to work with students and graduates so jumped at the chance to work here.
My work is quite varied (I won’t bore you with a long list) but the majority of what I do focuses on work experience. I’ll mainly be blogging about different ways to gain skills and experience throughout your time at university.
Helen P – Careers Consultant
Before entering the world of careers work 8 years ago, I had already tried out several other careers and considered even more. After graduating in Russian Studies in 1995, I taught English in Japan and Russia, started a PhD, worked as a bookseller, product manager, business analyst and project manager. Having worked in various sectors (including retail, pharmaceuticals and publishing), I’ve now found a job I love, combining careers guidance with working on web-related projects. I feel my own zigzag career path helps me relate quite well to those students I advise who are trying to figure out what they want to do!
Jenny – Information Officer
I’m Jenny and I’m an information officer here at the University of Manchester Careers Service.
I studied religion and theology here at the university and then joined the careers service in September 2004, just after I graduated. I’ve also just finished my part-time Masters degree in Library and Information Management.
My job in the Careers Service is to help manage and organise the resources we have here, to make the information easier to use and more accessible to students and graduates. I’m also an applications adviser, so I’m trained to give you advice and guidance on your CV, application forms etc.
Our student bloggers for 2009-10 are…
Tom Owen
I’m a third year BA Econ student specializing in Development and Sociology. My favourite interests include writing and American sports.
Angela Wipperman
I am in my final year of a Biochemistry degree, and am trying to figure out ‘what’s next’. I am originally form the back-of-beyond, Essex, where I keep chickens. Yes, that’s keep chickens. When I am not working very, very hard in the library I am reading, attempting to learn the fiddle, trying in vain to figure out how the hell my fancy camera works or watching foreign language films in an attempt to appear cultured. I have no firm career plans, other than a certainty that I am done with science for a while. I also hope to take a year out to travel, or maybe live and work abroad. My careers blog will follow my attempts to locate a career path and start treading it, albeit with heavy heart and dragging feet.
Priya Thakrar
Hi everybody, I’m a second year student studying Religions and Theology… and no, I don’t want to be a nun when I’m older! Sensible interests include reading novels with a non-fictional background, googling and stalking random religious/political websites. Less sensible interests include going to cheap bars (I’m still a 2nd year – I’m allowed!) and eating Dominos pizza with extra garlic and herb sauce.
