As a languages graduate (from a while back!) who didn’t really know what I wanted to do but knew what I didn’t want to do, I can relate to this post too. Sometimes seeing/hearing/reading about a job/company which *doesn’t* appeal helps focus your mind on what it is you *do* want from a job.

I should mention though that the Aldi graduate scheme is certainly not a 9-5 job…!

That’s great Priya. Experiences like your ‘Manchester Jailbreak’ challenge show determination and initiative too – more skills employers are looking for. It isn’t always easy to find a part-time job in the current climate, as you’ve said. But there are jobs out there, and you’ve shown very well how there are plenty of other things you can do to enhance your CV too!

Thanks for the comment Fiona! Other students like Tom will be encouraged to find that organisations like yours are interested in attracting people onto their graduate training schemes who may still be in the process of defining their long-term career goals, but have bags of talent and potential, and have developed those all-important ‘transferable skills’ along the way.

Hi Tom, perhaps your indecisiveness could be focused at a company like Daisy, a telecoms firm, which is expanding greatly and looking for bright young talent.
We have two places for a graduate training programme available at the moment, a two-year programme in which you work in various departments, if PR is your thing, this can be arranged. It gives you the option to find out where your talents lie while receiving full pay and a management role at the end of the programme. Perhaps you could come for an interview and post a blog about the experience?

This is very comprehensive!
It also brings to my mind again whether is still a real need for the more traditional job profiles still produced by some organisations. Yes of course they offer benefits, but I wonder if there are more effective ways of using the resources – I’m not sure and open to views…
