You might have found it hard to miss all of the news recently about recession and the global economic downturn.  If you’ve seen it but ignored it because you don’t think it’s relevant, now might be the time to think again.  The job market this year is certainly tougher than it’s been in recent years, and it may well be like this for several years to come. 

We hope that the information on this blog will help you to answer some of the FAQs that you have about the recession and get you thinking about things that you can do to lessen the impact of the recession on your job search/career plans.

How will the recession affect Undergraduates?

There’s no easy answer to this as depending on your year of study, you may be feeling the effects of the recession more strongly than others. 

First years - you might be thinking that it isn’t something you need to worry about. However, if you are looking to get a part time job, or some work experience you might have noticed that there are fewer opportunities being advertised or that places who normally take on a lot of staff have reduced their recruitment numbers.

Second/pre-final years -you might have been able to secure some work experience but who knows exactly how your future job search will be affected? Equally, maybe you haven’t been able to get a placement and are finding that your search for work experience is being affected a lot.

Final years – as you are about to graduate, you might feel the effects of the recession hardest especially in terms of your job search and the opportunities that are available at the moment.
