Graduate schemes are a very popular way to start a career. They are usually with big organisations that can afford to invest in well structured training programmes for new entrants. If you are about to graduate or are going into your final year, now’s the time to research opportunities. Good places to look, include www.top100graduateemployers.com, www.get.hobsons.co.uk and www.prospects.ac.uk Free graduate employer directories are available from the Careers Service at Crawford House on Booth Street East.
While some employers recruit throughout the year others will have autumn deadlines. If you do your research now you won’t miss out on earlier closing dates. Bear in mind that vacancies get filled very quickly, so if possible aim to get your application in early. Don’t waste your time putting in lots of applications that you haven’t prepared properly. ‘Cut and paste’ answers stand out a mile, particularly if you’ve forgotten to change the name of the employer – it does happen. Research the employer, tailor your skills, experience and achievements to fit what they are looking for and watch your spelling and grammar. Don’t forget support is available; simply call into the careers service to receive feedback and advice on an application or, if you’re away from Manchester, email firstname.lastname@example.org.
