Get paid work experience with a major publishing company on campus

December 20, 2010

For at least the last two years, a student from the University of Manchester has been one of a select group of just 8 students from all over the UK who have joined the Pearson Student Advisory Board.

Pearson Education, the leading publisher for higher education, is now once again looking for bright, motivated university students to become part of its Pearson Student Advisory Board from September 2011 until June 2012. Could you be one of the 8 students selected?

This is a brilliant opportunity for any current 1st or 2nd year students who want to get experience in any of the following areas: publishing, education, business or marketing. Read the rest of this entry »

Time is Ticking

December 17, 2010

Lauren Millen (Student Blogger)

Hello and welcome to my first blog post. I am currently in my final year studying Fashion and Textile Retailing (BSc). I wanted to write on here so that others can share my experience during the last few months of my time in university. I will be job hunting and applying for graduate schemes so that when I finish I’ve got an exciting job waiting for me (hopefully) and I can keep my little flat.

I have a few dream job ideas and I am very open minded towards what my future career will be. My main interest is in Logistics and Supply Chain but I have also enjoyed the Buying and Merchandising part of my degree course.  I am going to apply for many different jobs and see what comes my way! Ideally I would like to work in Manchester as I have a lot of commitments here. So far I have been surprised by how many businesses in the fashion industry have bases in the Northwest but it does limit my options significantly as a lot of company head offices are based in London.  I have therefore applied for graduate schemes in other areas such as food and drink.

Thinking about a Career in Investment Banking?

December 14, 2010

Is it the prestige? The rapid career progression? The responsibility? Or could it possibly be the six figure salary that’s made you fancy yourself as the next hot shot city banker?

Whatever the attraction, if you’re thinking a career in banking might be for you, finding an internship is a sure-fire way of helping your chances of succeeding in the City.

The good news is that internships these days are not just for penultimate year students.  There are now opportunities with most banks for first years and final years (if you’re planning to study for a masters that is).

The even better news is that you’re not too late to apply for next summer BUT you do need to get your skates on – most of the deadlines are in December or January.  Take a look at a list my colleague has complied for the deadline dates.

Earlier this month, I met with a number of graduate recruiters from leading investment banks.  They shared with me a few of their top tips to think about when applying for an internship.  Here goes:

Competition to attend Summer Institutes in the USA

December 13, 2010

As it’s cold/freezing/wet/snowy here (delete as appropriate depending on when you read this!), I thought you  might like to know about a competition being run by the US-UK Fulbright Commission.  They are offering UK students the chance to go to the US for 4-5 week summer programmes. There’s only a small number of places available so I expect the competition for them will be fierce.

There are a number of programmes available which are open to undergraduates who will still have at least one year of university study left when they complete the programme in summer 2011 (there’s one for PhD students too if you are a postgrad reading this blog). The undergraduate programmes are on:

  • Innovation and Economics
  • Civic Activism
  • Education in the 21st Century
  • Environmental Stewardship

The competition for places is open now and closes on 25 February 2011.  For full details of the application process, eligibility criteria and what is involved in the various programmes, visit the US-UK Fulbright Commission Summer Institutes website.

Event report: How to Get Ahead in Digital Marketing & Advertising

December 8, 2010

Last week on 1st December we had our big digital marketing and advertising careers event – How to Get Ahead in Digital Marketing & Advertising – which we told you about in an earlier post, and many students made it through the Arctic weather conditions to come and find out about graduate careers in this growing sector from Manchester’s digital industry professionals.

We’re hoping to be able to put presentations and audio on our website soon for anyone who missed the event, but in the meantime two of the Careers Service’s student marketing interns, Jack and Kristina, attended the event. Here’s their report:

———————————————————————————————–

“How to Get Ahead in Digital Marketing & Advertising” was the question of the day, and the many speakers did a fantastic job of answering that and many more questions for the University of Manchester, Manchester Metropolitan University and the University of Salford students who braved the snow to attend the event Read the rest of this entry »
