Last Wednesday I was allowed out of the office to go on a visit. This time it was to Lincoln’s Inn in London (to those of you who are not of a legal persuasion, the Inns of Courts are important for Barristers and those training to be Barristers). A lot of the day revolved around certainty.

Careers services when you graduate
June 18, 2010Yes, if you’re about to graduate, our help doesn’t stop here. Lots of students I speak to don’t realise that they can use all the services the Careers Service offers for 3 years after graduation. If you’re not sure what we offer, there’s a list of services on our website.
While this blog is really aimed at undergraduates, the good news is that we also have an older sibling blog – the Manchester Graduate Careers blog – which will help you make the transition into the world of work, further study or whatever your next steps might be as a new graduate.
At the moment, the Graduate Careers blog is featuring an excellent ‘How to find a job’ series – very timely if you’re graduating and thinking ‘What next?’, as well as other useful posts like:
- ‘Disappointed with your result’ (maybe you got a 2:2 when you were hoping for a 2:1?)
- ‘Finance sector increasing graduate intake’
- ‘Paid Creative Internship Opportunities’
Have a great summer and good luck with all your career plans!

Workin’ 9 to 5
June 15, 2010Helen McGuire, student blogger
Over the last semester I’ve been working part time alongside my degree in a company specialising in online marketing and web development. It wasn’t strictly 9 to 5, but 2 ‘til 6 (which in student terms is pretty much a full day’s work). So if you’re in two minds about whether to get a part-time job while you’re here at university, I thought I’d impart some wisdom and maybe help you make a decision. Read the rest of this entry »

About to graduate and still no career plans? Why you shouldn’t worry!
June 9, 2010Doesn’t it come around quickly! One minute it’s Welcome Week and you’re all wide-eyed and bushy-tailed looking forward to an exciting new phase in your life – university and all that comes with it – and the next minute you’re about to graduate and hit the so-called ‘real world’. How did that happen?!
No clear career plans yet? No worries!
If you don’t have a nice clear career plan all mapped out, laminated and pinned to your bedroom wall, don’t panic – you’re in very good company. Quite a few of the students I see as a careers consultant only have the haziest of career plans and when I graduated I was pretty much in the same position as you. It was a full 4 1/2 years before I settled into what might be considered ‘a career’. I’m going to tell you my story to show you why you shouldn’t worry and how you can make the most of the position you’re in. Read the rest of this entry »
