Thinking about a career in the media?

March 28, 2011

If the answer to the question is yes, then read on! We’re running our annual ‘Insight into Broadcasting and Journalism’ course on Monday 11th and Tuesday 12th April 2011. My colleague Anna’s ‘Want a career in the media?’ post on the graduate blog gives all the details.

It’s the start of the Easter vacation so if you want to get into the sector and can stay in Manchester for a few extra days once term finishes, you may want to do so. There’s a charge for the course (£42.50) which covers course fees, materials, lunch and refreshments.

It’s a couple of days well spent learning from industry professionals – you get the chance to take part in interactive workshops as well as hear from current industry experts. Don’t take my word for it – one of our student blogger’s Priya wrote about it a while ago so you may want to read that review too!

If you’re interested make sure to get your booking form and payment in soon as there are only a limited number of places available and it’s a great way to get an idea of what might be involved in the industry, find out about successful routes in and meet some current professionals too! We hope to see you there.

March 25, 2011
Common reasons for studying overseas
  • Learning or improving language skills
  • Gaining cultural awareness
  • Making contacts for future employment
  • Doing a course not available in the UK
  • Cheaper fees
Consider carefully what you hope to gain from studying in another country, in some cases the fees may be cheaper but you need to be sure that this course of study will take you closer to your career goals.

Careers in Publishing event – Thursday 17th March

March 9, 2011

If you’re thinking about a career in publishing, or if you don’t really know much about the sector and what roles are available and want to find out whether this might be something for you or not, make sure you don’t miss our ‘Careers in Publishing’ panel event next Thursday 17th March 12.30-2pm in the Careers Service.

This session is a chance for you to hear from experts from the publishing sector about the diverse opportunities in publishing for graduates, routes in, work experience, what employers look for and recent developments in the sector. You’ll also have the chance to put your burning questions to the professionals. Experienced publishers from Manchester-based publishing houses Manchester University Press and Graduate Prospects will be on the panel to share their top tips and answer questions.

Register for this event on CareersLink now.

£10 cash reward for your feedback… Careers Service Little Book

March 9, 2011

We’re currently updating some of our careers literature and we’d be interested in getting feedback from students who read our publications. One of these publications is our ‘A little book to get you started…’.

We are looking for students to be part of a focus group taking place on Tuesday 29th March over the lunchtime period. If you are interested in providing us with your thoughts and suggestions (no prior knowledge or experience required!), please email Adele King (adele.king@manchester.ac.uk) with your name, year of study and degree.

Please reply by Friday 18th March – selected students will then be invited to take part and cash will be paid on the day.

Thanks for your support!
